EV Charger Installation — The Legal Requirements
This isn't optional reading — every home EV charger installation in the UK must meet these standards.
Building Regulations Part P
Every EV charger installation in a domestic property is notifiable work under Building Regulations Part P (Electrical Safety — Dwellings).
Must be carried out by a registered competent person — such as a NAPIT-registered electrician — or notified to the local authority building control.
We handle all Part P notification and certification as part of every installation.
Building Regulations Part S
Part S (Infrastructure for the Charging of Electric Vehicles) came into force June 2022.
New residential and commercial buildings with car parking must include EV charging infrastructure.
If you're extending or renovating and adding a car parking space, Part S may apply to your project.
Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021
All EV charge points above 3.5kW sold or installed in the UK must be "smart" — capable of scheduling, load management, and communication with the grid.
This means all modern home chargers must support off-peak smart charging and be compatible with smart meters.
We only install chargers that are fully compliant with the 2021 Regulations and PAS 1899.
OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant
Government grants are available for eligible customers (from April 2026: up to £500 per socket).
Eligible: renters and flat owners, landlords of residential rental properties, and homeowners with only on-street parking using approved cross-pavement solutions.
Note: The original homeowner grant for standalone houses ended in 2022. Call us to discuss whether you qualify.
All installations we carry out are through OZEV-approved processes.
The Tricky Ones Are Our Speciality
Most installers quote the easy jobs. We solve the ones other electricians walk away from.
Underground Cabling
If the charger location is across a driveway or garden, we can excavate and install armoured underground cable — properly, with the right depth, protection, and ducting for future access.
No Space in the Consumer Unit
If your fuse board is full, we can install a separate external weatherproof consumer unit adjacent to the charger — a clean solution that doesn't require a full board upgrade.
Long Cable Runs
If your meter or consumer unit is on the opposite side of the property from your parking, we'll plan the best route — through cavity walls, under floors, or externally with trunking — and quote it honestly.
Difficult Earthing Arrangements
Homes with PME (Protective Multiple Earthing) supplies require careful earthing at the charge point. We check this before every installation and handle it correctly — it's a safety-critical step that some installers miss.

Honest answers about EV charger installation.
Every installation is different — the price depends on the length of cable run, whether excavation is needed, consumer unit capacity, and the charger model. We provide fixed-price quotes after reviewing photos and video. Most standard domestic installations fall in the region of £400–£900 including the charger unit, but complex installations (underground runs, external consumer units, long distances) are quoted individually.
In most cases, no. Installing a wall-mounted EV charger is permitted development under Class A of Schedule 2 to the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015. However, if your property is listed or in a conservation area, different rules apply. We'll flag this if relevant.
The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant provides up to £500 per socket (from April 2026) for renters, flat owners, and landlords of residential rental properties. The original homeowner grant for standalone houses ended in 2022. Workplace grants are available separately. We can advise whether your installation qualifies.

Most standard domestic installations take 3–5 hours. Installations requiring excavation, external consumer units, or long cable runs may take a full day. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote.
